Lots of News emails
Posted by Lee Conlin on 29 June 2011 01:54 PM

We are aware that a small number of our news subscribers received one of our news alerts many times this morning.

This was due to a bug in the helpdesk software we use whereby the mail queue was not being cleared correctly.

We have been informed by the company responsibly for our helpdesk that the email queue has been cleared and no further emails are being sent out.  They are currently looking into why the problem happened again in the first place.  We have made it clear that we are not happy that this has happened again and they are under instruction to ensure that it does not happen again.

We can only apologise for the inconvinience this may have caused.  Please be assured we take this very seriously.

Google join the social scene
Posted by Lee Conlin on 29 June 2011 09:58 AM

Google have released a "+1" button that is very similar in function to the "Like" and "Tweet" buttons already in use all over the web for other social networking sites.

How it works....

A lot of people now have Google accounts in one form or another, be it from YouTube, an android device or any of the many other sites and services that Google operate.  When you click the "+1" logo on a page, any contacts saved in your Google account will see these as "Recommended sites" when they do a relevant search while signed into their Google account.

FAQ

The +1 button and search results

Q: How does +1 affect search results?

A: +1 helps people discover relevant content—a website, a Google search result, or an ad—from the people they already know and trust. Adding the +1 button to your pages lets users recommend your content, knowing that their friends and contacts will see their recommendation when it’s most relevant—in the context of Google search results.

When a signed-in Google user is searching, your Google search result snippet may be annotated with the names of the user's connections who've +1'd your page. If none of a user's connections has +1'd your page, your snippet may display the aggregate number of +1's your page has received.

Q: Does +1 affect my site’s performance in search?

A: Content recommended by friends and acquaintances is often more relevant than content from strangers. For example, a movie review from an expert is useful, but a movie review from a friend who shares your tastes can be even better. Because of this, +1’s from friends and contacts can be a useful signal to Google when determining the relevance of your page to a user’s query. This is just one of many signals Google may use to determine a page’s relevance and ranking, and we’re constantly tweaking and improving our algorithm to improve overall search quality. For +1's, as with any new ranking signal, we'll be starting carefully and learning how those signals affect search quality.

Q: How will the +1 button affect my traffic?

A: Personalized annotations next to your page in search results may increase your site’s visibility and make your site’s snippet more compelling, which may in turn increase the odds that users will click through to your page.

Update: Content editor & Internet Explorer 9
Posted by Lee Conlin on 23 May 2011 11:29 AM

Update #2 08/06/2011

We have applied a tag to the content editor page that will force IE9 to use compatibility mode by default.  This should prevent any further occurrances of this issue unless Compatibility mode is explicitly and manually turned off on purpose.

Updated 08/06/2011

We have located the cause of this issue and it appears to be related to the Telerik RadEditor control used to allow easy editing of product descriptions.

The issue occurs only in Internet Explorer 9 when compatibility mode is not active.

When editing content the action of switching between Design view and HTML view duplicates the BR tags in the HTML view for each and every switch.

Telerik are aware of the problem but as yet have not released a fix for it.  The workaround at present is either to use a different web browser to edit content (such as Firefox) or to turn on IE's compatibility mode when editing content using IE9.

A further update will be provided as soon as we have a fix available to us.

Previous Messages

We have been made aware of an issue with the rich texr content editors and Internet Explorer 9 that causes additional new lines to be inserted into content each time the editor is loaded.

We are working on a fix for this issue and an update will be posted once it is live.

Until then, as a work around, we recommend merchants use Firefox when editing content.

Note: Store fronts have no problems with IE9... it is limited only to the editor in the admin area.
