We would suggest you avoid the use of strange fonts styles (bold, italic etc) and colours and just started uploading content concentrating on making it look simple and straightforward. Make sure you fill in at least the teaser text and upload a teaser image for each product (and of course a price) upload at least 6 and make sure that you have a paragraph about your company (in the "company details page"). Next take a little time choosing a style and arranging the page controls (in the "site look and feel section". Only use the page controls you need and maybe only use them down the left of the page. Make sure you have uploaded a company logo. The best advice would be to start by keeping the store simple, clean and straightforward, when you get more confident you can add more content and try new things.
